Stone Restoration

There are so many ways to clean a stone building, and when restoration is key finding the right method can be paramount. Many cleaning companies lack both knowledge and experience when working with stone. Selecting the correct stone cleaning method first requires a thorough survey, as it it is not possible to be gung-ho in stone care and conservation. Our initial survey will establish the materials present, including both stone and mortar type. Furthermore, we will highlight and identify damage that needs to be repaired before cleaning restoration commences.

We will also identify the causes of stone deterioration and soiling. Dirt can be airborne from traffic or industrial emissions, and organic growths like lichens, fungi, or bacteria can be significant. Localised staining from paint, iron, and graffiti can also be present. Depending on the level of soiling, some deterioration may already be apparent and affecting the stone’s subsurface. A stone’s chemical make-up can also make it subject to natural mineralisation, which while not damaging can look unsightly. With such complex factors to consider, expert cleaning is highly advisable as inexperienced contractors, subjecting stone to incorrect cleaning methods, can do far much more harm than good.

At Softwashing UK, we will use low pressure technology to restore your stonework. These could include more traditional cleaning methods, or import equipment that may use super-light abrasion, or nozzle applied steam. These technologies are used extensively across Europe and the US, and are designed for this purpose.  All our personnel are fully trained, qualified, and insured to use such equipment.
