Softwashing UK were contracted to clean and restore the prestigious Roman House in London. The limestone facade had become contaminated with organic growth – both algae – and also black mould – most likely the varieties Aspergillus Niger and Gloecapsa Magma.

Roman House is situated in the City of London in the famous EC2 postcode, next to London Wall. While it once housed offices it is now a refurbished 90 apartment and penthouse complex that overlooks the historic St Alphage Gardens and also St Giles Church. It is a very desirable area due to its past, and its reputation, in the heart of the financial district. The building was restored to reflect the characteristic modernism of the area- that was itself redeveloped post World War 2. The nearby Barbican centre is famous for its Brutalist design.

The Roman House facade is of Portland Stone. This limestone is a fabulous building material giving a smooth and pale finish. The stone dates back to the Late Jurassic period and is quarried uniquely on the Isle of Portland in Dorset. It is used not only on Roman House, itself a listed building, but also Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral. It has been exported globally – and is also used in the UN headquarters in New york.

Working on such a high value listed property requires the utmost precision. The correct methods need to be deployed to satisfy heritage criteria. It was also important to work safely and communicate in advance to protect the public and prevent interference.

Softwashing UK used the Doff Steam System to restore the Portland Stone. This system is recommended by Historic England, and uses steam at a tightly controlled temperature to deliver exceptional restorative results.

As you can see from the video case study – the results were impressive- and we were delighted to play our small part in protecting our shared architectural legacy.
