Roofing Associations and tile manufacturers warn against using high pressure washing to clean roof tiles. This is why roof tile cleaning is one of our more popular services.
The pressure used is far too risky and likely to do much more harm than good. It will almost certainly diminish the life cycle of the tiles, and you do not want to needlessly incur the costs of replacing expensive materials like slate.
There is even a fair chance you may flood your loft too. So when moss or other organic growths are getting out of hand, it is time to consider cleaning them without pressure.
Softwashing detergent blends both kill and remove infectants, and the results from a softwash will last for up to three times longer too.
To keep costs and risks down, Softwashing UK will usually clean as much as possible from ground level, using extendable water fed poles to softly cleanse wherever possible.
But in a case of severe roof infection, the best option may be to check and clean every tile one by one. Softwashing UK staff are fully trained, qualified, and insured to work at height.
Before cleaning your roof tiles, we will first inspect the roof thoroughly for any tiles that need replacing, as cleaning damaged tiles just risks potential damage to the roof and interior.
We will then perform a surface clean, using soft contact scrapers to remove the most visible growth. The tools we use for this are designed to not to scratch or blemish your roof tiles in the process.
Once the worst of the moss or other infectant is removed, we will gently cleanse the tiles one by one using a selected detergent blend that is specific to the task at hand. Softwash products never enter the drains and water system.
So when you’ve identified your roof tiles as being a hazard, Softwashing UK can expertly help restore and clean them.

Over time, roof tiles across the UK become stained and discoloured due to algae, moss, lichen, and general grime buildup. Not only does this affect the appearance of your property, but it can also lead to long-term damage. That’s where Softwashing UK comes in.
We offer professional roof tile cleaning using specialist soft washing technology — a safer, longer-lasting alternative to traditional pressure washing.
Unlike high-pressure methods that can crack tiles, dislodge mortar, or void warranties, our low-pressure soft wash system uses biodegradable cleaning solutions that safely remove biological growth and deep-set dirt. This method penetrates the porous surface of roof tiles to kill moss, algae, and lichen at the root — without causing damage.
Our soft wash process doesn’t just make your roof look clean — it keeps it that way. By eliminating spores and bacteria, we help prevent the regrowth of moss and algae, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and saving you money in the long run.
We go beyond cleaning — we treat and protect. Our biocidal soft wash solution neutralises moss, algae, and lichen at the source, ensuring a longer-lasting clean and preventing damage caused by these organisms retaining moisture on your tiles.
Pressure washing can be risky, especially on older or fragile roofs. Our soft wash method is gentle enough for all tile types, yet powerful enough to remove years of staining and biological contamination, preserving the integrity of your roof.
When you choose Softwashing UK, you’re choosing certified professionals trained in safe roof access, chemical handling, and soft washing techniques. We are fully insured, giving you peace of mind that your roof is in expert hands.
