Softwashing UK won a contract with Carmarthenshire council to clean and restore numerous council owned properties. After several years the council houses were in need of maintenance cleaning. Many elevations on the properties had become contaminated with organic growth. This caused both red and black staining to appear, and regular cleaning techniques, like power washing, will not remove this. Power washing also risks damaging the render. The UPVC soffits gutters and doors were also contaminated with mould, and many of the boundary fences were affected. This was a reasonably complex job. As a busy residential area all members of the public needed to be kept safe while work was underway. There were also several different types of render in play- including K-Rend- Parex, Weber, and painted render.
Who Was the Client?
Carmarthenshire is an historic county of Wales. It has been populated since pre-history- and while it is a largely rural county it has large (post) industrial towns where coal, steel, and tin were important industries. The three largest towns are Carmarthen (the administrative capital of the county) , Llanelli, and Ammanford. The council owns social housing across the county, and takes the welfare of its tenants seriously.
Health and Safety on a housing cleaning project
Softwashing UK takes health and safety very seriously. The company has not had a single reportable accident in its 10 year history. In order to deliver this project safely communication was key- and as the sole contractor Softwashing UK coordinated between the council and their tenants. We ensured that all tenants knew when the clean was taking place, and as importantly what to do before, after, and during the work taking place. Softwashing UK stewards were also on hand to advise the public and prevent interference.
An organic cleaning solution was used to clean the buildings and kill the organic growth. While regular biocide is safe when used correctly- the council has an obligation to use the safest possible solution available. For this reason a totally non toxic solution was used on this project. Steam cleaning was then used to ensure the best results and an excellent finish.
As you can see from the video case study- the results were really excellent.
