The three walls at the front of the Kinetic Business Centre, Barnett, London, had become contaminated with organic growth, and also dirt, dust, and air pollution. the growth was very pronounced in many areas, with algae and mould apparent, including black mould known as Aspergillus Niger. Climbing plants had also colonised the building in many areas previously, causing minor damage, and rust and oxidisation was apparent also. This all required specialist treatment to remove as it was having a detrimental effect on the appearance of the building.
Much of the project was completed from the safety of the ground using water fed poles, but due to height and the architectural features it was also necessary to use a cherry picker to reach all areas. In order to avoid unnecessary inference in the day to day operations of the centre all work was completed over the weekend, working long hours as necessary to complete the job on time and budget. Softwashing UK were able to undertake a huge volume of work over a very short period of time. This required highly skilled technical and project management, as well as considerable skill and a great attitude from our technicians on the ground.
We first used the English Heritage recommended Doff Steam system to begin cleaning all substrates on all three elevations, removing the dirt, pollution, and visible organic growth. We then Softwashed the building with a good quality DDAC biocide to kill the growth at root system, ensuring the longevity of treatment. One elevation, with purple paint, was suffering from oxidisation, and we were able tp restore that area very effectively. We also removed the marks from ivy roots using the Doff System. All signage was cleaned and treated, and the roof area also restored using the same method.
