Stone Restoration Case Study- Carrick Fergus Castle
What was needed?
Carrick Fergus Castle, Ireland, had become contaminated with organic growth, namely single cell green algae. This growth feeds off damp and minerals and there is very little From a heritage perspective this made the castle look poor condition, and if untreated longer term it risked damaging the stonework permanently. The custodians of the castle were obviously keen to attain great results, but also aware that all works should be as risk free as possible, with a treatment that would not put the public at any risk as this restoration was completed. Softwashing UK were invited to participate in this restoration project, and used all their expertise to deliver it on time and budget.
What we did?
Safewash, a risk free and organic external cleaning product, was used to treat and restore castle. This product has a biocidal effect, and killed and removed the offending organic growth. At no stage were workers, public, or wildlife, put at risk by chemicals, as Safewash is risk free. We operated with sensitivity as the castle is an important piece of heritage that must be respected. There were no complaints at any stage during the project. A large team were required to complete this project, and the project was expertly managed.
