The colour finished render properties at Golden Mile, Newport, a development run by Firstport, were in urgent need of render cleaning and render restoration. The substrate had become colonised by an organic growth that was very pronounced, and residents were understandably frustrated. This frustration was compounded as other cleaning companies had attempted to clean the render and had failed. Softwashing UK were contacted initially with a degree of scepticism. Firstport had tried all of the companies in their existing procurement framework, but without any success- none of their existing suppliers had been able to clean the render. Softwashing UK were contacted and conducted a test patch, with impressive results. They were then contracted to clean the entire development.
The substrate was covered with a diverse biofilm of growth that had been building up over a number of years. It consisted of several organisms including single cell green algae, red algae known as Trentopohlia, and black mould. This kind of organic growth cannot be removed from render using old fashioned jet washing techniques that risk damaging the render. They can only be removed from softwashing biocidal treatment.
Softwashing UK completed this project working under CDM regulations 2015 to ensure the safety of residents and workers alike. First the substrate was cleaned using the Historic England recommended Doff Integra Steam System, which uses highly controlled temperatures to steam a surface at low pressure. The substrate was then given a deep clean using softwashing. As the buildings were less than sixty feet tall, with good access all round, the project could be completed entirely from the safety of the ground. This poses less risk, and means great efficiency too, as no costly plant or scaffold is required, and the project can be completed quicker.
The results were seriously impressive. Softwashing UK have gone on to win numerous projects for Firstport for several years.
