Softwashing is perfect for block paving. Low pressure means it's easy to clean a large or small area. The tiniest moss and fungi spores can be removed.
Block Paving Cleaning Services
Over time even the best laid paving slabs need some tlc. The effects of general wear and tear, and the growth of weeds, moss, algae, and lichens, accumulate. At Softwashing UK we have expertise in cleaning all sort of stone types and pavements, and offer professional block cleaning services.
Without regular maintenance, weeds (the most tenacious of plants) will grow in between paving slabs, typically taking root in the dust and sand between the blocks. Only in very rare instances will weeds actually grow through paving blocks; the notorious Japanese Knot Weed will grow through blocks up to 200 mm thick, for example. The good news is that this means a simple softwash treatment will remove weeds from your blockwork and paving, and the integrity of the surface is unlikely to be compromised by weed growth. While high pressure washing can only blast the weed away, and risk damaging the block along with nearby vegetation, our softwash biocide blends will kill weeds. A softwash treatment also typically lasts three times longer than a high pressure wash.
We also remove unsightly growth from block paving, namely algae. Green algae can look unsightly, and over time it will also prove a slip hazard. Unfortunately the solutions you can buy over the counter to remove it are ineffective, as they do not not offer sufficient concentrations of biocide, and specialist treatment is therefore required. At Softwashing UK we will use DDAC biocides, and steam at low pressure (as recommmended by Historic England), to remove all kinds of organic growth, restoring block paving to optimum condition.

Algae, which is particularly present and persistent on limestone block and paving across the West of the UK, can also be treated. We will use super low pressure and a specialised blend of softwash detergents to both kill and remove all traces of algae. Lichens, which use a combination of symbiotic processes to establish and colonise a block or paving slab, are even more persistent. They are most common on concrete and sometimes on limestone, but less frequently on granite or other igneous rock types. The tenacity of lichens will require far more than a high pressure blast to remove them and with higher pressures comes more risk of damage. At Softwashing UK, we use specialised detergent blends, often with an ammonium component, to ensure the lichen’s removal and destruction. This requires expertise, and our adherence to health and safety is paramount.
The very specific nature of organic blemishes and infections, and varying stone types that behave and react differently to even household cleaning agents, can require expert intervention. The results of our softwash block cleaning services typically last up to three times longer than a high pressure wash, so to both maintain and restore your block paving call Softwashing UK.
